3 Loved Habits That AREN’T Eco-Friendly (& What to do about them!)

We all have habits that aren’t eco-(or pocket)-friendly. Here are a few of my vices and what I’ve done to curb my impact.

  1. Sleeping with the fan or TV on:

-  Timer: Try plugging in or turning on a timer

-  Movies: Movies are great for mellowing out for a finite time

-  Open a window

2. Multiple lights on in different rooms: We all are guilty of this at some point. We leave a room with the intention of returning or simply forget to flip the switch. Though you might use Energy Star light bulbs, here are a few other ideas to preserve the energy.

-  Motion sensors: Motion sensors are a fantastic way to keep energy preserved without any effort! Installing the sensors isn’t complicated, just make sure they’re at the right sensitivity.

-  Lamp supplements: Candles are a great way to supplement traditional lighting and keep energy costs down. They’re also a great way to make your space more relaxing!

3. Bottled water: It’s easy and convenient. While it’s actually easier to turn the faucet on, keeping a reusable bottle around is apparently too much for many bottled water consumers. What can be done to curb your plastic-addiction?

-  Know what’s in your H2O. Test your faucet water and/or get a water tap/container purifier. You’ll feel better about knowing what you’re consuming.

-  Try switching to glass. You’ll notice a difference in your water’s taste. You also might find it’s a little nicer to drink from glass! If you’re a bit rough on your beverages, make sure it’s a thick glass and consider a sleeve for the outside. A cheap option for making the switch is to simply re-use glass bottles used by water distributors such as Voss.  At $3.99 per bottle, it’s a much cheaper option than the Pottery Barn alternative (priced around $25 each!).
