Lighting Solutions for Apartment Living

Lighting an apartment can be a fun chance to fill a practical need while creatively expressing yourself. There are literally thousands of lighting solutions for ever space and every event in an apartment. Of course some work better than others based on needs and personal preferences.

My favorite type of lighting is natural lighting. It’s warm, inviting, and best of all it’s free. Some disadvantages of natural lighting include it’s unpredictability due to weather and limited availability. For example, I live on the first floor of a multi-level building.

This means that I am limited to the light that shines through the few windows on the sunny side of the building (something to remember next time I choose an apartment). My last apartment had a skylight, and I loved it. I wish I still had one, but that might create an awkward situation with the couple living above me so I still haven’t mentioned it to the property manager.

Floor lamps are wonderful. They are relatively inexpensive and versatile alternative to fixtures. Floor lamps come in just about any color, style and size one can imagine. They can adapt to a space or a change in decorating simply by changing the lampshade. A disadvantage is that floor lamps generally have long, unsightly cords. It’s not easy to hide them in a small space so I need to get creative every now and then.

Table lamps can be a cool fix to a lighting need. They can be cheaper than floor lamps, but of course table lamps require a table. So for me, this means that I have to either go out and buy a new table for my new lamp or sacrifice precious real estate on my tabletop or desk.
