Another Way to Help the Community
Pepsi is doing an incredible thing! So, In return I want to either: Do good in my community, or come up with some ideas that better my community. Right now, Michigan has dozens of foreclosed homes on every block. Due to overwhelming unemployment, I’m sure it’s hard for people to make their house note or even a heat or electricity bill.
Here is my idea: Helping Hand Movers. It could be run on a volunteer basis. These people could use their own vehicles or maybe we could build up to owning trucks (like big mover trucks). The point of the vehicles and the volunteers would be to help those people being evicted or whose home has been foreclosed on move there things. It is my understanding that apartment complexes will sometimes auction off what people have left in their apartment or simply throw it out.
Storage units that have defaulted on payments also auction the leasers belongings off. I’m sure these people don’t want to lose their belongings. With the situations and happenings in their life that are causing them to miss payments, I’m sure the stress of losing the belongings they already have can be overwhelming. I offer a truck and a helpful hand to freely take their belongings to a safe place (friend or families home). If that option was not available to these people, imagine if we offered discounted- to- free storage facilities depending on situation or income. You could do this like a scholarship from a college: essays and/or interviews to decide eligibility for the storage units.
The storage of their belongings would be strictly short term. Enough time for them to get on their feet somewhere (4 to 6 months, maybe?). We could also do monthly unit-wide garage sales and offer counselors that can help people sell some of their belongings to help them get on their feet (similar to a charity auction). The people that help with this would emulate the process from the popular T.V show “Clean House.” The money earned could be matched in some way, if possible, and/or put towards a security deposit on an apartment or one month of rent. Something to give them a place for them and their stuff. What do you think?

We were so inspired by the Pepsi Refresh project reallocating their marketing money to go toward the greater good that we decided to do our own small part in helping out our communities. Each week we will be posting blogs on ways that we have contributed to bettering the communities we live in. The MyRentalPad team hopes you are inspired to make a difference and join us!
