Celebrities Can’t Make Rent? Mischa Barton’s Big Mistake

Have you ever found yourself behind on bills? I know I have! Being a college student, one doesn’t necessarily make a great deal on money. However, I have never found myself being behind on rent. Somehow things always seem to work themselves out.

Apparently one can’t say the same for 24-year-old actress Mischa Barton. News has come out that the landlord of her $7,000-a-month pad in New York City is suing her for unpaid back rent. Miss Barton, who also lives in Los Angeles, got an apartment in New York last September so she could shoot her canceled television show “The Beautiful Life.”

The cancellation of the show may have something to do with her missing payments, but come on! She’s famous and has been in enough movies and television shows that she should be able to make rent. And if not, she needs to learn how to budget. Get with the program lady!

I understand a lot of things can happen in life that can cause financial problems that may result in not being able to afford rent, but there’s really no excuse. If you can’t afford to pay the month’s rent, there are several options available for most people (and I can almost guarantee Mischa Barton is one of those people). You can get a bank loan, ask a friend or family member for a loan, or talk to your landlord about your situation.

My guess is that money wasn’t really the issue in Barton’s case. From the very little I know of her, I can tell that she has had some problems and sounds like a heap of a mess (rehab, canceled shows, being sued for unpaid rent?!). My hypothesis on this situation is that since her show was canceled, she probably had little reason to stay in NYC. I don’t know her personally, but perhaps she has an inflated celebrity head and thought to herself, “Well, I’m just not going to pay since I’m not living there. I’m Mischa Barton.”

Yea, that sounds a bit mean. But can you honestly believe that Miss Mischa couldn’t pay her rent? Since her reps won’t make a statement, people are going to make their own assumptions. It’s part of the territory of fame. Normally, I don’t care about the “what’s happening” in celebrity lives, but I am kind of appalled by this news.

Think I’m being a bit too harsh on Mischa Barton? Give me your opinions!
