Mobility in Work and Life
I recently quit my day job for an opportunity to work from home. Ok, I say work from home but what I really mean is work from a co-work space, coffee shop, car, park or just about anywhere I can take a laptop. It has its up and downs, but I wouldn’t trade the freedom it has allowed me for the world.
It’s a great thing to wake up in my apartment without the stress of anticipating the commute to work that lies ahead of me. There is no rushing out the door only to fight traffic and then remember that I forgot something at back at my place. I don’t have to wait for a “reasonable” hour to take my lunch. Perhaps the biggest stress that has been lifted has been that lurking boss who only seems to show up when I’m running around like my hair is on fire. Yup, I don’t miss that at all.
Now I get to roll out of bed at a “reasonable” hour. If I need an extra half hour at the gym, then I can go ahead and take it. I can work in my cozy apartment wearing my favorite pajamas or I can dress business casual and head out to the co-working space.
There are still days when I might need that sense of urgency that accompanies a 9 to 5, but I am happy that I traded in that giant ticking all seeing, all knowing time clock for my smaller and somewhat more forgiving hourglass. When it comes down to it, the work has to be done on time, but at least with an hourglass that I control I get to let it rest on it’s side for a while until I’m ready to let it pour again. Ahhh, there’s no place like home.
What are your favorite things about working from home?
