Trading Rent for Work: How We Share Responsibilities
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you can’t quite make rent while paying utilities and everything else you need to throughout the month? Being a college student, that seems to be the story of my life right now. However, I am extremely lucky and thankful that I currently have a unique and blessed living arrangement that I can afford.
My boyfriend and I moved into our apartment last June. Before moving in together, I discussed with him the fact that I do not make the money I need to be able to afford living out of my mother’s house. I did not think it was a good idea for me to put such a burden on him, but through negotiations and compromise, we came to an agreement that (unfortunately for him) benefits me a bit more.
These negotiations include:
- Him: rent + renters insurance + water bill
- Me: cable + electric + gas +groceries (and other household necessities)
Along with the little I pay for, I also make dinners and do the majority of house and yard work, as well as take care of his pup while he works long hours. (I do not want to sell him short; he is very sweet and does contribute!)  This works for us because we have a very understanding relationship but more importantly, we were very honest upfront. I do not recommend moving in with someone and THEN explaining your financial situation, hoping for the best. You need to be upfront and honest about all financial situations before considering this option.
So if you ever find yourself in a situation where you need a place to stay but do not have the money to even split rent 50/50, hopefully you can find someone cool enough to take on the extra financial responsibilities and figure out different ways for you to contribute.
