Baseball Fever
My roommate Sam and I recently watched the movie, “Fever Pitch”. It is an adorable movie featuring Ben (Jimmy Fallon) and Lindsay (Drew Barrymore). Lindsay, a successful yet slightly-workaholic business woman, meets the love of her life, “school teacher Ben.” You might call her a pessimist, but I view her as more of a realist: she is waiting to find out what his Achilles Heel is. Once spring hits and Red Sox season begins, she find out. Ben has been obsessed with the Red Sox since age seven, when he moved to Boston. Ben introduces Lindsay to his “second family” at Fenway Park, and she tries to learn to love the sport as much as Ben.
Not only was this a feel-good and a laugh-out-loud type of movie, but it is just in time for the baseball season to begin! On April 9, my team of choice, the Tigers, will begin their 2010 season. While Sam is a baseball fanatic, I am not afraid to admit I am a fair-weather fan; although I do enjoy live sporting events. Nevertheless, I am excited for the day when my season tickets to the Tigers will be delivered!
I can still remember going to Tiger Stadium as a kid. My aunt would take her mother-in-law, my brother and I. We would practice keeping score and always be ready to catch a ball when a lefty stepped up to the plate. Cecil Fielder was my favorite Tiger and we would always wait to get his autograph. I can remember being disappointed when we didn’t end up getting his famed signature. My aunt, not missing a beat got out her pen and signed his name on my mitt and said, “Okay, there it is, you got his autograph.” The rest of the day, I was so excited to tell everyone that Cecil Fielder’s name was on my baseball glove.
Are you going to go to any games this year? What are your favorite baseball memories?
