Walking In: A Seemingly Simple Action That Could Potentially Ruin a Day

The world is filled with awkward situations. Sometimes I feel as if my own life is just a series of awkward circumstances. Just this morning, I looked down to see a white sliver below my shoe that was a souvenir from my last trip to the bathroom. Awesome. Then, in a sudden spout of glee, I shout a greeting at a friend from across campus – which of course turns out to be a complete stranger who just stares at me in bewilderment.

There are awkward situations that happen to you in front of others and awkward situations that happen to others in front of you. I’ve learned to deal with the former category lightheartedly and just roll with the punches. They say the greatest key to happiness in life is being able to laugh at yourself, right? But what do you do when it’s someone else?

On a day much like today, with the sun shining and the birds singing, I walked into my apartment with eagerness to spend the rest of the day lounging around and doing a whole lot of nothing. Quickly glancing at my watch, I excitedly realized that my roommate would be in class for the next two hours and I could rest without irritation.

For those of you who do not have the tremendous pleasure of knowing this girl, let me give you a snapshot. Our room perpetually flaunts leftover Chinese takeout and clippings – nail clippings – that she decided she didn’t need to throw away.

On this particular day, I walked down my hall as I fumbled for my keys while unsuccessfully trying to hold onto all of my groceries. In my defense, the fact that the door was unlocked was completely lost on me. I walked in on my roommate and an unknown male specimen, an image that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Okay, maybe my worst enemy.

I know some of you might think this a bit dramatic, but this is definitely characterized as an awkward situation verging on the brink of rudeness. I later told her that should she feel the urge to skip class to get to know her new male friend, she should shoot me a text or maybe… just an idea, lock the door.

What would you have done? Have you ever walked into an awkward situation such as this one? Share your stories!
